The person must be able to show that he or she must support himself and/or herself without assistance or assistance may not be considered to be in need of support. How to contribute. Your contributions depend on your individual circumstances. You may contribute up to 6% of your adjusted gross income for the year to your HSA. You will receive the IRS Form 1095-A each April after you turn age 59 1/2. Furthermore, you will be given a code that you used to calculate whether your contribution can be used for the following year or not. Don't make any HSA contributions before age 59 1/2. If you choose to make HSA contributions later in life, make a good-faith effort to do so on the current year's tax return. You can use a separate HSA contribution amount for each year in which you make an HSA contribution; however, if you fail to use all six available HSA funds for at least one year in a row, your contribution may be deemed improper and the IRS may withhold 10% of the contributions. You must report HSA contributions to line 6 of your federal income tax return. High Deductible Health Plan If you are eligible to enroll in a qualified high-deductible health plan (see How to Find a Plan), you have to pay a deductible for your out-of-pocket health care costs. Deductible amounts vary depending on health plans. Generally, deductibles are limited to 1% of the health insurance rate for each participant in the group (see The Dental Deductible).
