The solvent was removed by crystallizing by heat, and the resulting pellet was treated with 5 mL cold ethanol to wash away the alcohol, and the sample was dried. The combined solid and the residue were washed with five times 10 mL 70% ethanol and the final methanol sample was extracted with 3 mL 20% formic acid. Then the residue was treated with five times 5 mL 20% formic acid from the residue, dried on a slow fire for an additional 30 minutes, and the solid was collected, and the filtrate was concentrated to give a residue containing 20% of the original polymer (1.6 g/L). The resulting filtrate was washed with 5 mL 5X 50% methanol and the filtrate was dissolved in 10 mL water, the residue was filtered and the organic layer was washed with 500 SL 100% ethanol and the residue was concentrated to yield a residue containing 20% of the original polymer (1.6 g/L). The combined solid and the residue were washed with five times 10 mL 70% ethanol and the final methanol sample was filtered and the solid was dried. The filtrate was concentrated to give a residue containing 2.4 g/L of resorcinol.
