The anonymity of our system is ensured by defining an algorithm which allows a client to find the information desired, while keeping the actual data unknown to the server. This algorithm is called “Distributed, Oblivious Keyword Search”. In this paper, we provide a brief description of this algorithm. We then demonstrate its robustness and security using an application to the discovery of a new email address. In particular, we show that our system is not vulnerable to attacks such as replay attacks on hidden messages and attacks against weak key distribution. This paper was done by Barth Madhavan, Chris Stoats, and Aaron Van Weren, with the help of Sebastian Gruenfeld. It was partially funded by the National Science Foundation. It shows how to secure a system with hidden data and provides an algorithm for the absoluteness of hidden data (in the general case, hidden data is simply that which is unknown to the server; in this case, what the client is searching for). In particular, it demonstrates the robustness and security of the algorithm at various levels of complexity for the following two cases: The server can know exactly what it is doing, and must have a good deal of knowledge in order to perform this operation. The client can make a request for a certain piece of information but without revealing that it is seeking it. Thus, the server can be sure that it will receive the requested information. If in the case where the server has no knowledge of what is sought, the requester knows he is merely searching for an answer (and without telling other servers where he is going); this is known as a “solved world” (replay attack). In a solution world, all server knowledge must be hidden from the requester. The only knowledge allowed is that which is needed to determine if the request is complete or not.
