This dissertation addresses several key issues that can be addressed through theory and empirical research: first, there is a lack of a widely-agreed definition of what defines a “help-seeking community”, such that the role of the community is quantified in the literature; second, the number of people who consider this community a “key resource” is under-documented; third, a mechanism for defining a community which can serve as a “key resource” is needed to make this role quantifiable; and fourth, an evaluation method can be established to better assess the success of this community. Methods The focus group of the online help-seeking community is used as a case study. The results of the study include, most significant, four key findings. First, there is no common understanding of what a help-seeking community is; second, there is a lack of a standard definition of a help-seeking community; third, there is a lack of the formal mechanisms to determine the success of this community as “key resources”; and fourth, the existence of a key resource is poorly understood. The case study results reveal the key insights that can be applied to other online communities, as well as to existing offline ones.
