Please include your name and phone number when posting to the Matterhorn. Berkeley (September 11, 2003) In the wake of the terrorist attacks on the United States, Berkeley student groups and other citizens of all faiths and political persuasions are responding positively to the idea of “the United States of Berkeley.” Our first action as a university community was to hold a vigil for those who lost their lives and to join us in mourning the countless others, both civilian and military, who died on September 11, only to learn that the events of that day had not taken place. We also took the unusual step of holding a memorial service for the victims on the steps of the Washington Memorial and at the Berkeley campus. As we prepared for yet another memorial service on September 17-18, we also learned that the federal government had decided to move the memorial service location in light of the September 11th attacks on the capital. As such, we have decided to move the gathering from the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, to the Washington Memorial and from September 24 to September 27. We are grateful to the President and the Board of Regents who made this possible. We also would like to thank members of the campus who took the initiative to coordinate with our office and the President's office to coordinate the arrangements. Furthermore, we would especially like to thank all those who came out for a series of events on September 14-15, including events for the military and the Muslim chaplains. These events were both successful and productive, but ultimately the main purpose of the events was to promote discussion around the idea of the United States of Berkeley for the benefit of our campus community and our community of faith and politics. More and more, students and others of conscience are recognizing the need for a more democratic and compassionate government. We feel a sense of urgency that the United States might face a similar crisis in the near future to that which we experienced on September 11. We are proud to join our faculty and students in reaffirming our commitment to the ideals of equality and justice, for the dignity of all human beings and the integrity of our government.
