Finally, an understanding of the differences between C and C++ source code is offered. (BibTeX available as: DOI:10.1145/356813). An Introduction to the C Language Michael H. Crowell and Michael F. Very Department of Computer Science and Engineering University of Southern California Los Angeles California 90095 Crowell crew AT OSS.USC.edu Very Mary AT OSS.USC.edu Crowell Michael Very Michael Email: crew OSS.USC.edu Abstract A basic introductory course on the C programming language is presented. This course covers the basics that a C programmer needs in order to do most of her job. It is assumed that the programmer knows enough C to write a simple program but is not prepared to learn how to do more advanced things. This course starts out on the foundations taught by the most authoritative books and covers the most basic C terminology such as variables, functions and types; function-specific behavior; control flow; memory and data structures and how they are organized; variable-level memory access with pointers and pointers to reference counting data structures; memory management with pointers. The first part of the course is about how to write simple computer programs in C. It goes into detail about the use of the C programming language's basic data structures such as arrays, classes and structures; arrays, by using constructors to get the array of objects; classes, structures and functions; functions, by calling one another; the use of strings and numbers; control flow with conditional execution; arrays and strings, function prototypes and variable declaration; the handling of errors with print and if. In the second part of the course, a more sophisticated example of C programming is presented. The course focuses on a particular C library which is considered more or less essential to most C-programmers. The topics covered include creating and handling data structures, passing functions between arrays, handling of exceptions and printing with strike and print. In this third part of the course a discussion of memory management with pointers is emphasized. This third part concludes with a more extensive discussion of the standard system calls and the implementation methods in each library used with C programs. C Programming Basics Peter F.
