She has seen a lot of change come with the agricultural landscape in Chatham County. “Green” agriculture means something different to each farmer. “There is a lot of variance when it comes to green agriculture on organic farms. What we call one thing today, somebody might call something else,” she said. “One day farmers might be growing organic vegetables and that night they might have eggs. It gets really complicated because there is so many variables in the process. It's really fun seeing the different crops that are grown here that you wouldn't normally see here in the rest of the country. For us, our farmer's market is really important. There's a lot of farmers we see every week that we're pretty certain would eat nothing but vegetables. They might drink milk or eat meat, but they would only eat those foods if they were grown in a sustainable manner. “When I was a kid growing up on the farm, a lot of my friends had dogs,” she recalled. “I've seen so many things as I've grown older. There's so many ways of doing food.” The first section of the Green Farm website, which was launched in January 2002 and will cover a variety of topics such as sustainable agriculture and the benefits of healthy soils, will be completed this spring. There are still a lot of things that need to be done on the website in order to provide visitors with information and practical guidance on green farming in the Chatham area. For example, the area needs a website for the local farmers market and information on green farms and farm sales in the Chatham County area. “If we don't start getting those in place by March 2003, we're going to fall behind,” Chatham County Extension Agent Judy Hogan said. “The more we get it done before then, the quicker we will be able to update and update the site.” The Chatham-Troy Community Foundation is a 501 C4 organization that provides financial support to the Chatham-Troy Farmers Market, Green Schools in schools throughout the county in which Chatham County Elementary students are enrolled, the community services center and Chatham County Public Library. “I can't believe I'm getting up at five o'clock in the morning to look at that site,” Hogan said, laughing. “I'm still pretty amazed by it, the amount of work that has gone into it,” she said.
