We define hypermedia authoring systems that can manage links to information resources, using the Linkage Descriptor as an object-oriented representation of links and of a text-based reference document. Our system thus enables the creation of user defined hypermedia objects, including links within hypertext documents. Moreover, our system has several advantages over typical hypermedia authoring systems. We demonstrate its versatility by using it to create links to three different sets of documents, to build a multimedia user interface, and to author text-based documents that can be freely re-used and shared. Keywords: Hypertext, Hypermedia, Object-oriented programming. In: ACM Technical Report, ACM. . 2.4.1.2 Building Text in Hypermedia : Linking to Additional Documents This paper presents a link-based authoring system that makes it possible for the author to add information to a document, without changing the document's content or metadata. Rather than embedding information in the document's body, the reader is able to navigate to a link to the new information by clicking or “clicking on” the link. Users can then see a preview of the new material, and can download the new material by clicking on a link embedded in the preview. The resulting “hyperlinked” version allows the link to be re-used in numerous versions of the same document, and thus promotes the reuse of the hypertext. We use the term hyperlinked in a generic fashion to describe any type of link embedded in the page. It can be used to define an independent link within a document, to link to another document, or to link in an embedded form. One of the main motivations for this new method of authoring is that it will allow authors to focus on the content of the new piece of information, rather than on the way it was created, and this is important given the current trend in information technology towards “publishing-as-a-service,” and increasingly towards the integration of online content. We propose a system for authoring hyperlinks to an arbitrary number of additional documents based on a simple link-based syntax, that allows an author to create several links at the same time.
