Steve Bullock and the Department of Corrections. The Nexus facility opened yesterday on a large parking lot in Lewiston. The facility has four buildings -- one for men, one for women, one for juveniles and one for those with mental health diagnoses. “I love Wyoming, and Wyoming is awesome,” said Joe Newman, the governor's public safety liaison. “We all understand that there a couple places that are better, and there are places that are worse.” “But this is a very exciting project because everybody knows that our prisons and our jails here are overcrowded, and they are not working for anybody. They are creating more crime, and we have to do something different to relieve the stress on the system because nobody wants to commit a crime.” There are about 500 people incarcerated in Wyoming facilities, according to Gov. Bullock. The Nexus center is meant to replace the prison for violent offenders. But the program also has promise to reduce crime and improve community relations. “It is an incredible initiative that the administration has worked with the community on, and I thought was the right thing to do,” said Mike O'Hear, the Fergus County commissioner who signed off on Nexus after hearing about it from Lt. Gov. Kelli Star gel. “They have put a lot of time into this,” said O'Hear. The Nexus center is one component of the statewide plan to reduce the incarcerated population and improve the public safety of the state. While some people are frustrated by the slow pace of crime reduction, some say it is getting faster and some think crime is falling even faster. But that's because the state is making up for lost time. And some wonder if the crime reductions will hold. “You have to think about what are the resources in the community going to look like after you take those out,” said Lisa Vidal, director of the community and economic development center for Lewiston. “You are going to have an enormous impact on the community if the community is not functioning properly at this time.” “As a governor and a public official, we all have to make sure we are thinking about the well-being of people in our community,” said U.S. Rep. Dave Rather. Rather is from the southern part of Washington County and knows the problems of the prison and the prison system and prison reform.
