Students should be familiar with most of the technical tools and equipment required in the trades, as well as basic understanding how they are used in practice. The program builds on and builds upon the core of skills and knowledge developed by previous programs, and is designed to provide ongoing instruction to prepare students to successfully perform their chosen careers in the finishing trades and related occupations. This program is intended for those who have completed an apprenticeship leading to a work permit under the rules and regulations issued by the local labor authority, have taken the approved apprentice training program, and are actively applying for a work permit. The programs are designed to provide the students with an overall education program covering topics such as the history and development of the various craft trades (see Appendix B), apprenticeship in basic trades, and the use of vocational skills and tools on the day-to-day job of an apprentice. Program Goals The students in the Core Curriculum program should progress throughout the 12-month program in the following areas: • An understanding of basic tools and equipment required for the tasks assigned in the trades • A thorough knowledge and understanding of the skills and tools provided by the trade • Knowledge and understanding of the specific tasks involved in the work of the trades • Continued practice skills, such as the use of equipment and machinery • Continued instruction in various skills and knowledge, in the areas taught in the apprenticeship training program • Continued exposure to specialized work in the trades during each session of the program. IUPAC/Finishing Trades Institute Program Goals General Principles and Criteria The student in the Core Curriculum program should attain at least a B- or better. The specific requirements for success in the programs are listed in Appendix A. The minimum score an individual student must reach is 80×. The minimum score an individual student must attain is 100% in all 3 of the following areas in order for him or her to be considered successful in the Core Curriculum Program: • Knowledge and understanding of the specific task and process involved in the work of the trades • Knowledge of the general rules of the trade and general principles of safety • Professional ethics and character required in the business of the trade Education Requirements 1. The student must complete a 12-month program to master the basic skills, knowledge, and skills pertaining to the profession, as defined in Appendix B in the following 6 years: two years at night school and one year of on-the-job training under an instructor. 2.
