The panel stated that the “fishing quota of Mediterranean blue fin tuna (fin) is now at its maximum sustainable level, and it is therefore clear that the fishers (of the Mediterranean) will struggle to support the population”. 7 In fact, even while the Blue fin was still able to sustainably fish in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, illegal fisheries were taking advantage of the abundance of blue fin and started raiding the stocks in the Mediterranean and North-East Atlantic.
