NAMC is actively involved in a number of research fields, including healthcare image analysis, and is currently working with academic institutions to help improve the quality and accuracy of health care analysis and to develop new clinical data analysis tools. NA-MIC recently participated in the NIH Roadmap Initiative, a federal grant competition intended to encourage the development of open-source, comprehensive, and high-quality data analysis tools for medical research that will be deployed in high-quality clinical applications. In this report, NA-MIC outlines the state of image analysis across the United States using clinical case-studies as exemplar for the type of analysis work it will provide, as well as the major research areas of interest that will be investigated, and the activities for which funding was provided to support NA-MIC's work. NA-MIC comprises three major divisions: (a) NAMC, consisting of the following organizations: the University of Iowa, University of Texas at Austin, Stanford University, and Arizona State University; (b) NA-MIC, consisting of the following organizations with offices in each of the three divisions: the Medical Image Computing Group (MIC) at the University of Iowa, the Biomedical Image Computing Group (BI GCG) at the Texas A and M University, and the Human Imaging Research (HIS) Group at Stanford University. NAMC is a consortium organization representing its members at the highest levels of its community; NAMC currently has eight member institutions with offices in the various divisions and provides funding services to these institutions. (c) NA-IM, consisting of: The National Association for Medical Image Analysis (NA-IMA), the National Association for Medical Image Computing (NA-MIC), the National Academy of Medicine (NAS), the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and NAMC; and (d) the NA-CORE, an independent technical and scientific community organization consisting of the following organizations: the Institute for Bioinformatics at the University of Iowa; the Center for Bioinformatics at Texas A&M University; the Human Imaging Research (HIS) Group (Stanford University); and the NA-CORE. NA-IMA was founded in March 2004 as the first organization within NA-MIC with a focus and expertise in image-based medical research. The main area of expertise of NA-IMA is analyzing biomedical image datasets, primarily from human subjects, for diagnostic, therapeutic, and statistical purposes.
