Definitions The following definitions are used in this policy. EHS Emergency Situation Hazardous Materials Incident/Incident is defined as an actual, potentially unsafe behavior, occurring to an individual at a specific, identifiable location and time. Examples may include: The ingestion of hazardous materials on campus buildings or other campus areas, such as the Student Union, the Student Recreation Center, or on the West Quad. An instance of toxicology, or to diagnose a potential hazard, is defined as: The ingestion of a hazardous substance, by an individual, at a location, time, or condition that causes symptoms that, if left untreated, could potentially endanger a life.
Profound symptoms that indicate exposure to a chemical or biological agent that could be hazardous to health, and that may require medical advice or emergency care.
A situation in which there is a possibility of injury or potential trauma to a person (for example: a person being kicked or tackled after entering campus; a dog bite in the Student Arena or other areas where pets (including dogs) are allowed).
A situation in which there is a substantial risk of bodily harm and/or environmental contamination to an individual's health.
The ingestion of a poisonous or hazardous substance by an individual in a dangerous situation.
The presence of an infectious or poisonous substance; for example, a needle on campus or a poisonous or deadly substance in a food place such as in the Gourmet Food Court.
A situation in which a student or visitor may be exposed to dangerous substances.
A situation in which the danger requires urgent action by the EHS Office.
A situation in which a dangerous substance poses a hazard to others or the environment.
