After reviewing the application materials we decided to approve the general application. In addition, we were impressed with the following: A clearly identified need — The Historic Properties are being impacted by multiple extreme climate events, many with severe weather. The Historic Properties are also suffering a severe shortage of historical documentation. The Cultural Heritage Grant Program is intended to aid in filling and supplementing these gaps. Extensive technical assistance prior to planning — From the application instructions, we saw several references to the assistance SH SND has received from other grants, specifically: “The Historic Properties are currently experiencing a historic and ongoing need for historic preservation.” Providing a list of resources, both online and in person and a specific request for information — A list of available programs, and specific resources. A request for specific documentation that SH SND may be seeking or requesting. In addition, the State Historical Society provides a list of available resources for interested individuals. The application itself contained several other significant factors. The Cultural Heritage Grant Program is intended to be a comprehensive, community wide effort that can be developed at SH SND's discretion. We want all organizations interested in working on heritage restoration to have access to the appropriate resources. The SH SND Cultural Heritage Grant Program provides the flexibility needed to make this possible. We will provide a detailed description of the Cultural Heritage Grant Program next quarter. “Dine sties” For those of you not familiar with the term, this is a word often used in reference to historical buildings and sites. If you use Google or Wikipedia, you may see that Dine sties are typically found in some locations where historical sites are located. For example, it might be mentioned on your hotel or restaurant reservation when you make a hotel or restaurant reservation that tells you about the place's Dine sties. We are particularly interested in learning more about Dine sties in North Dakota State University's buildings and campus facilities, since we have several of them on campus. (See the SH SND campus map.) We have a few ideas about what they might be, and they are a bit of a challenge to find (like the old brick building on the right-hand side of the picture).
