Results show the cost per customer order for the first year of a system is about 25; annual maintenance and additional capacity cost about 80 per order or 5.1 million over the life of the system. In most cases, order-allocation systems provide no additional cost, and some are even substantially less expensive to operate than conventional delivery systems. As a result, more than one-third of a conventional order backlog—a sum of 3,400 orders—can be allocated across a variety of warehouses. ABSTRACT This paper outlines some issues and presents results comparing the costs and benefits of ordering through warehouse systems with ordering through conventional delivery services. We calculate total costs for a first year of the current system and compare them with those for three conventional delivery services, a combination of the conventional delivery and electronic commerce systems. The total system costs include costs associated with ordering, warehousing, stocking, and other management work, as well as an order-allocation system, maintenance costs, and labor. The benefits of each system are then calculated as a percent increase in revenue over conventional delivery service levels. In several areas, we estimate that the benefits of having the option of selecting one of four systems over the other were greater than the costs associated with the same ordering options. Our findings and conclusions are applicable to the delivery of almost any commodity within a supply chain. ABSTRACT Organic materials' production may change much larger volume or quantity of material depending on a variety of factors that can impact the performance or return of the manufacturing process. Supply chain management involves a range of responsibilities for optimizing both the quality and the costs of the distribution and product flow process while also managing inventory levels, inventory cycles, and the timing of deliveries. A key objective of management is to develop and execute appropriate strategies that provide the shortest time, the lowest cost, and greatest value to the company. This paper provides an inside look at our current warehouse system management process, and our goals in that process, and the impact it can have on the company. Information on this page was gathered from a variety of sources, including a variety of meetings and visits with management, trade show presentations, corporate and government reports, and the companies own presentation material. Also included are some comments to illustrate what is described here (i.e., information from corporate and government presentations).
