National Forest land The Battle at Blair Mountain, July 23, 2011, may go down in history as the first armed confrontation between the US Forest Service and “patriots” seeking to protect their rights. It is also the first time since World War II that the US Forest Service has faced armed resistance by citizens against US policies. A gathering of hundreds and thousands of people in the mountains was part of an ongoing “Rally Against Dictatorship” that has been called “Operation Restore our Democracy” since it was launched a two and half years ago. The purpose of that organization, according to its website, is to “expose, prevent, and end government corruption, theft, and abuse, and to reclaim our democracy and our freedoms.” Many of the speakers that were in Blair Mountain to support the Operation Restore New Democracy and other right-wing and libertarian groups were members of the Militia of Montana that was also involved in the April 18, 2011, Bundy Ranch standoff in Nevada. This time the situation resulted in the arrest of militia leaders including two members of the Montana 4th and 7th and several members of the West Michigan Oath Keepers at Blair Mountain. While both the USES and militia leaders in Montana have been arrested, this time around in Blair Mountain many of the participants were arrested. But even with a few people at Blair Mountain being arrested for refusing to leave the area or being otherwise hostile to the USES and its officers, the USES was prepared to go in guns blazing. When the first shots were fired at the USES by militia members around 7:30 p.m., they responded by sending in a reserve team with four military helicopters. This helicopter team took down many of the militia and USES members, and were not successful in apprehending all of them. After a standoff lasting three hours, the USES withdrew and went home. All those arrested did not face any charges from the USES, according to a statement on their website. In addition to an arrest at the beginning of the altercation for failing to follow an officer's orders while on private property for which they were issued a permit, there was another standoff that went on for an additional three hours at Blair Mountain after the USES sent a team into the woods to arrest a militia member who resisted a USES helicopter's entry to Blair Mountain.
