Kenneth C. Smith, Office of the Associate Administrator for Research and Statistical Services, assisted in the preparation of this report. The report was developed for the 1997 U.S. Census Bureau economic census program within the office of the Assistant Chief for Census Programs. This program is administered by the Economic Census Division of the Office of the Chief Economist. The program offers Census Bureau technical assistance to those agencies performing analysis or publication functions for the Census Bureau in order to encourage them to consider the Census Bureau as additional data sources to use in the production of national, population, and population change information. This report was prepared under authority given by section 5 of the Statistics and Program Administration Act of 1978, as amended (7 U.S.C. 5). The Report is based on the preparation staff's analysis of the economic data on the Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation industry for the period January to December 1998. The staff's analysis considers not only those activities as reported in the Annual Statistical Supplement to the Economic Census, but also those activities that were not reported due to lack of data. The staff's analysis focuses on data from individual economic data collection units which provides the basis for its overall conclusions and recommendations. The staff believes that any economic census report should take into account the differences between the level and types of activities reported in the various economic data sources by focusing on the overall activity level rather than on the specific number of activities reported. These differences do have an effect on the accuracy and completeness of the industry data reported in these reports. The staff reports are based on information gathered and compiled in consultation with members of the statistical community and representatives of the agencies who make the data available. It makes no attempt to quantify the total of the economic census information on the Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation industry. For further information please contact the Office of the Chief Economist at: Chief Economist's Office, Department of Statistics and Program Administration, U.S. Census Bureau, 1301 Constitution Avenue NW., Washington, DC, 20; telephone, or e-mail: census-at-stat.census.gov.
