This year's District will use Scouting as a new approach to community service to foster greater responsibility and commitment in young people. Brent has been the District Scoutmaster since 1984 and was the District Director for Scouting Districts 776, 784, 809, 812, 817, 820. Now he will be spearheading the North Star District's new effort to create positive changes for youth across District 776. Our district continues to show the impact that positive Scouting has on our young people and the community at large. When Brent was asked by North Star D.P.C to serve as new District Scoutmaster in 1999, “We looked at each other and found we were one huge family.” Brent has been instrumental in creating one of Utah's best-attended and most successful Scout meetings and programs each year since that time. North Star is the only North Star District in the area, and our focus is on creating a positive, inclusive and safe environment for youth. In his own words, “We can't have a successful Scout meeting or program if children are at risk of becoming victims.” Brent knows about that risk: his own son has been a victim of sexual abuse. “No child, boy or girl has ever walked away from that situation,” Brent says. North Star District 776 has recently launched a new program, the Camp Out For Trauma program (CAP) to increase their efforts to address that risk. The program starts by introducing young people to trauma recovery and then moves on through individual, group, and family therapy. It also focuses on creating an active, fun and safe outdoor environment to help youth manage their trauma and develop their social skills and physical strength. The Camp Out For Trauma Program is open to all Cub Scouts, Scouters, and adult volunteers. The program runs October through April. Learn more about CAP and how to have your child participate. The last step in our efforts to foster an inclusive Scouting program is to have our District be a member of the National Council. When Brent came to be District Scoutmaster, that decision was a little different.
