In the Modern Language Journal (March 1980), for example, Charles K. Johnson, ed., Technology and Innovation: The Case of Software Machines, stated: “We cannot think of the process of doing something as being 'to do something.' To think of that is to use a device, a procedure, and so on. An operation is a technique or process for doing something” (p. 9). In the same year Michael G. Wilson in Engineering the Mechanical Age (2001), published the following definition: “The technology of a system is the set of procedures that the operator performs before, during, and after the performance of any action on the system: a system is an elaborate collection of things or processes that are arranged to be combined in a way that will cause the system to perform a certain action.” For more than a century, the meaning of technology has varied according to one's historical and cultural background. At certain times, as mentioned above, I suggest that one's definition of technology is that specific set of technical principles and processes that a human being possesses, while other times, I emphasize that the particular set of technologies that are used in the production and design of a product must be the basis for a definition. It is not difficult to see, then, how a definition of technology using only those technical principles would be inappropriate in a definition that included software. Software, in contrast, is a combination of technology; it combines a machine or procedure with other machine or procedures.
