Ms. Franco has been chosen to serve as first female winner. She also is an advocate for children of mixed race families in higher education. Ms. Coll ado Rodriguez is using her studies of African and Caribbean women of color in Chicago to examine social, psychological, and medical issues affecting Black/Black women and families. She studies and documents women of color experiences with social stigma, shame, and oppression related to pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting, especially for racial and ethnic minorities. After graduating from Penn State College of Medicine, Ms. Coll ado is pursuing an MD degree at the University of Chicago. She is hoping to use her doctorate to help end “the hidden epidemic” of maternal mortality. She will continue her work of understanding racial disparities in the health care system. This scholarship will be used to benefit Marisa Franco, and Ana hi Coll ado Rodriguez. The Michael Sullivan Diversity Scholarship Fund is a program of the University of Pennsylvania's School of Medicine and the John Jay College of Criminal Justice. The fund was established in 2001 to help students of color attend graduate medical school. Eligibility rules differ for each award.
