The number of occupational deaths, injuries, and illnesses continues to increase. GMS must be safer, or Georgia will lose a generation of workers. The Georgia Interagency Safety Advisory Council (IGA), founded by the Georgia Department of Public Safety in 1995, is one voice that says, “The Georgia Legislature supports this program for GEMS/PEERS.” The state is investing in the development of an effective safety program, which helps protect our communities from workplace hazards and injuries. To protect our employees, we must have a reliable, comprehensive, and effective safety program. It is the policy of the state of Georgia to provide for the development, application, and enforcement of laws prohibiting unsafe conditions and work practices. The Georgia Department of Public Safety, through IGA, is committed to the safety of GEMS/PEERS members throughout the state of Georgia. The Georgia Department of Public Safety supports the training of GEMS/PEERS participants in safety and health, occupational safety, and health and safety of Georgia. The Department of Public Safety, in cooperation with IGA, is developing policies and rules governing safety matters, including safety in GEMS/PEERS. The training of GEMS/PEERS participants must be conducted to safety standards. Therefore, while IGA members continue to support the safety program, their expertise, knowledge, and expertise is used to assist in developing safety and health standards which reflect the need to protect employees and improve safety in all GEMS/PEERS members. All GEMS/PEERS members, both those hired and those employed by GEMS, are encouraged to be informed of, and comply with, the Georgia Department of Public Safety regulations governing their work. Failure to do so could result in disciplinary action. Please refer to the Georgia Department of Public Safety for the most current regulations regarding the use of chemical agents including gases, liquids, and aerosol containers during GEMS/PER Straining. GEMS/PEERS participants are responsible to comply with the regulations. Any persons who do not observe the current regulations may be subject to disciplinary action, including but not limited to, suspension and/or revocation of privileges to carry a chemical weapon or permit transporting chemical agents in Georgia. The training may still involve using dangerous chemicals as long as those chemicals are properly labeled and labeled in a manner to instruct personnel about how much, how much often, the method of use, and warning messages are to be provided to the public.
