We believe this could be caused by a variety of different factors ranging from weathering to the installation to something else, but it was all missed. This is why it is so important that any tower in this industry uses and recommends a range finder for the same reason that most folks use a range finder when doing a range check — that is, to make sure that the range measurement is within the “acceptable operating range” and not outside it. That “acceptable operating range” is the range measured from 10 to 50 meters to ensure that the end user can use that range to ensure safe operation. The range is within that range for a normal test on the first day of operation of the range finder, when the range finder is not functioning as designed and calibrated. However, if the range measurement was within a small fraction of the acceptable range, there is a chance the end user might have some issues operating safely in the range. That is why it is critical that a range finder be used when doing a range test. With a range finder, it is impossible to know if the range measurement is within an acceptable range or not — it would be impossible since we have no clue at the end of the day which was which. If you can't tell if the measurement is within the acceptable range then the test was not done right — the person using the range finder failed the test. That is exactly what these people missed. In the case of our Buffalo tower, the range meter was calibrated and working the first day that it was installed, but later that day, as the range finder was calibrated, it was determined that the range meter did not work the way that the manufacturer recommended, and we ordered a new meter as a corrective measure. However, the new meter is not performing at an acceptable level yet, and it was important to give ERA the opportunity to correct it before that situation became a situation of needing a new meter. ERA, a large company in the tower and tower-related electronics space, did provide us with a new range finder, and it is working properly. It is very expensive to make a new range finder, but it was just as important to have a new range finder, while ensuring that it was functioning correctly, so that it was available for use in conjunction with the range finder that they supplied us with. Another key factor here is that ERA also manufactured the new range finder and installed it with the tower to begin with.
