RESULTS Of the 63 trauma patients, 28 (35.4%) had no information on pain management at discharge. Thirty-one (45.6%) had some clinical history, and 12 (21.3%) had pain and/or limitation of movement recorded during PRE- and post-discharge. The mean pain scores of all the trauma patients were 4.1 on a scale from 0-20. Fifteen-nine percent of the patients were reported as having chronic pain at discharge. Pain intensity at discharge was rated 4.2 on a scale from 0 to 9, which corresponds with moderate pain. The majority of pediatric patients (57%, n=32) reported pain during or immediately after surgery. Twenty-four percent (n=27) reported moderate and 22%, or 40% of the general population (n=28), reported moderate to severe pain. Nineteen patients (37%, n=11) met the criteria for a generalized chronic pain syndrome. These patients, like the general population, reported moderate and/or severe pain during both PRE- and postoperative period. Of the 43 pediatric patients experiencing moderate-to-severe pain, 17 were experiencing chronic pain of chronic generalized or local origin. There were no serious adverse events reported. No other adverse events were reported during the evaluation. CONCLUSIONS Patients undergoing pediatric surgery are at high risk for severe chronic pain. A retrospective chart review with pain management survey tool was implemented to assess pain scores and clinical impact on the patients. The results demonstrated a large group of pediatric patients reporting moderate-to-severe chronic pain. These results suggest a need to implement a pain assessment in pediatric trauma patients. This data may also help to educate pediatric patients about appropriate pain management and management of their chronic pain.
