This paper presents data about nonfinancial enterprises from the national Census from 2006 to 2012 and their share in the total nonfinancial economic activity in Italy from the 2011 National Statistical Information System. The paper describes the way the data and estimation has been produced and presents analytical results. To get a better understanding of the sources of nonfinancial economic activity we propose a two-step approach: the first step seeks to estimate the total economic activity for an Italian area by considering only the nonfinancial sector as a whole; the second step considers the contribution of nonfinancial sector firms, measured in terms of economic activity. In doing so we focus on businesses employing under 50 employees, since those enterprises make up the majority of small businesses. The study focuses on employment statistics from three separate sources: the Labor Force Survey of Italy, the Federal Statistics Institute's Labor Force Survey and the Census. 6 Estimation 1: the total economic activity in an economy The analysis in this paper focuses on the total amount of economic activity in an Italian economy. However, economic activity is often measured by a wide range of parameters such as employment, sales, exports, gross capital formation, etc. Each of these parameters have their own analytical importance and there are usually not clear-cut  cut-offs between them in statistical analysis of aggregate data. To this end we have tried to establish the  most representative measure of the total economic activity based on available data and have estimated it for Italy using different models and approaches.
