He has been awarded the National Board of Medical Examiners' Certificate in Physician Management (1998). Additionally, he was recognized by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine with the National Medal of Technology (2000). His publications include articles in the Journal of Clinical Pediatrics, the Journal of Clinical Oncology, and the Journal of Medical Case Reports. Dr. Simmons received his B.A. in Biology and Music Performance from WSU (1982) and an M.D. in Biology from the University of Illinois at Chicago (1986). Dr. Simmons currently serves as president, CEO, and chair of the department of Family Medicine at a school-based hospital in Pennsylvania. He serves on various committees of his hospital, and is part owner of a car dealership. Dr. Sims is the recipient of numerous awards and honors. He is a member of the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) Board of Scientific Counselors, the North American Society of Clinical Oncology (PASCO) Board of Directors, the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCOT) Commission on Clinical Competence and Ethics, and other national and international medical societies. Dr. Sims is the author or editor of more than 100 scientific articles which were selected by the Editors of the American Journal of Clinical Oncology. The AAMC has honored him with the Outstanding Lifetime Achievement Award and the Outstanding Achievement award. In 2004, Dr. Sims was awarded a Leadership Award by PASCO, a division of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, for his contribution to healthcare and clinical research. Dr. Sims' research has also received numerous honors and awards, including the American Cancer Society's award for research that has been published in a peer-reviewed journal and the PASCO's Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Sims has received six honorary degrees, among which are the U.S. Presidents George H. W. Bush and Jimmy Carter, the A. F. & A. M. (Abel & Abraham) Society, the New York City Society of Hospital Medicine, the American Association of Clinical Oncologists, the American School of Nursing, and the International Association of Cancer Researchers, among many others.
