Mendes, a second year Doctor of Surgery of HSP — S o Paulo, presented a case of a newborn infant who presented with respiratory disturbances. The infant was brought to the pediatric ward and discharged a few hours after admission. The child was noted to have multiple ocular anomalies as a child, with conjunctival scarring and conjunctiva dysplasia. However, during routine tests his serum ocular proteins and bilirubin increased. He was diagnosed with congenital ocular hypertension, with hyperproliferation of epithelial cells in the ocular surface. He was referred to the ENT Service of HSP and the local ophthalmologists where he underwent a surgery on his conjunctiva. The surgical procedure was a series of two surgeries conducted in parallel over 6 months at two different hospitals. The first one was performed in Hospital Campinas and the one performed at HSP. It resulted in a complete resection of the ocular surface as well as the surgical removal of the epithelium. This surgical procedure was completed 6 months after the first surgical procedure. He was monitored constantly until the end of his follow-up as part of the clinical management of his condition. A year after he was discharged from the hospital as a positive result of the first surgery, his conjunctiva was still inflamed. He underwent another surgery at the Hospital of the Foresight at the General Hospital of São Paulo. The second surgery was performed in another hospital and led to the complete surgical excision of the epithelium. His ocular surface was completely restored, and his bilirubin levels were decreased to normal. No further surgery was necessary for the maintenance of his eye condition. These 3 patients were followed to their 6 month and 3 year follow-up. It should be noted that the patients were referred to the ENT service by pediatricians in the general hospital of São Paulo.
