On the contrary, the prevalence of “Facebook” among high school students (n=2821; mean BMI 9.08 ± 0.03; median GPA 3.4th percentile) is lower than their mean BMI (n=2689; mean BMI 9.2 ± 0.03; median GPA 3.6th percentile) in the general population (n=2493; mean BMI 9.0 ± 0.04; median GPA 3.6th percentile). The average BMI, mean GPA, and median GPA of “Facebook” students were not different between schools. Thus, these results point to lower prevalence of “social networks” among high school students than among the general population.
Discussion This is the first study regarding the prevalence of social networks in the U.S. high school students and the social media usage compared to the public. Overall, we found “Facebook” to be a major social network among the students. We also found that more than one in five student had “Facebook”. In terms of the other social networks, we did not find any significant differences between the students and the general population. In fact, social networks as such seemed to be less used in the students than in the general population. Thus, the results of this study cannot provide any strong evidence to indicate whether Facebook usage (defined as “Facebook”, “Google Plus”, and Twitter) actually leads to the increase in the usage of social network websites or whether their usage increases in a more indirect way. Further, studies to confirm the results of this study are needed in order to better understand and interpret the results.
