Critical Path Diagram

What is a critical path diagram?

A critical path diagram is a visual representation of the sequential steps involved in completing a project. It helps project managers and team members identify the critical tasks and their dependencies, ensuring that the project is completed on time.

What are the types of critical path diagrams?

There are two main types of critical path diagrams:

Activity-on-Node (AON) diagram: In this type of diagram, each node represents an activity, and arrows represent the dependencies between activities. It provides a clear overview of the project's critical path and helps in scheduling and resource allocation.
Activity-on-Arrow (AOA) diagram: In this type, the arrows represent activities, and nodes represent events or milestones. It is commonly used in construction projects, where the focus is on the completion of certain events rather than activities.

How to complete a critical path diagram:

Follow these steps to complete a critical path diagram:

01
Identify all the activities involved in the project.
02
Determine the order and dependencies of the activities.
03
Estimate the duration of each activity.
04
Calculate the earliest start time, earliest finish time, latest start time, and latest finish time for each activity.
05
Identify the critical path, which is the longest sequence of dependent activities that determines the project's overall duration.
06
Update the diagram as the project progresses to reflect any changes or delays.
07
Regularly review and monitor the critical path to ensure the project stays on track.

Questions & answers

The Critical Path Method (CPM) provides a way for project managers to determine which tasks are critical (zero slack time) and which tasks can be delayed (and for how long). Normally, you would need specialized software such as MS Project, but not any more.
A critical path method template is a reusable guide that helps you determine the critical path for a project. In project management, this path is the longest sequence of tasks you need to finish on time in order to complete your initiative—meaning any delays in critical tasks will delay your whole project.
You can set up your project schedule to display as many critical paths as you need to keep tabs on your project. Choose File > Options. Choose Advanced, scroll down to the bottom, and then select Calculate multiple critical paths. Choose View > Gantt Chart. Choose Format, and then select Critical tasks.
A simplified example of critical path project management is this project plan for building a house. All the tasks in the project are listed in the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), then the dependencies between the tasks are determined, and the duration of each task is calculated.
There are six steps in the critical path method: Step 1: Specify Each Activity. Step 2: Establish Dependencies (Activity Sequence) Step 3: Draw the Network Diagram. Step 4: Estimate Activity Completion Time. Step 5: Identify the Critical Path. Step 6: Update the Critical Path Diagram to Show Progress.
To show the critical path in MS Project, in the Gantt chart view, we go to Format, then Critical path. So, we click View tab → Gantt chart. Format tab → Critical tasks. After that, critical assignments will be highlighted in red.
