On June 29, 2022, Western Flyer was relaunched after its restoration at Port Townsend was completed, and towed to Seattle to receive a new hybrid engine and further outfit, before returning to Monterey.
WFX, which operates 1,150 power units and 3,000 dry van and reefer trailers, was founded by Rodney Timms and his son, Randy, in 1996. They started out with two trucks and four refrigerated trailers. Randy Timms assumed the role of CEO of WFX after his father retired as president in January 2021.
As weeks turned into months, and months to years, the Flyer remained at the dock in the slough until, almost as if she said, “Enough, already,” she ruptured a plank and sank into the mud.
The Western Flyer was built in 1937 in Tacoma Washington as a state-of-the-art purse seiner to fish for sardines out of Monterey. The builder was Martin Petrich, Sr., owner of the Western Boat Building Company.
The Western Flyer was a purse seiner (named for the type of fishing net used), working in Monterey Bay during the height of the sardine industry. It was made famous when author John Steinbeck and marine biologist Ed Ricketts chartered her for a marine specimen collecting trip to the Sea of Cortez in 1940.
The Western Flyer was acquired in February 2015, but due to decades of neglect by previous owners, and two recent sinking episodes, significant rehabilitation and restoration is required to return the vessel to service.
