Below is a list of the most common customer questions. If you can’t find an answer to your question, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
In general, consumers have one to three days to use that meat product if it is fresh before there would be concern from a safety standpoint. Typically, retailers will mark down the price of a product if the sell by date is near.
For sell-by dates that go past at home, you can continue to store the food for a short amount of time depending on what it is. Some common products are: ground meat and poultry (1-2 days past the date), beef (3-5 days past the date), eggs (3-5 weeks past the date).
The sell-by term you often see on food product labels refers to the last day that a retailer can have the product on display on a store shelf. It is believed that food items are safe to eat for up to 10 days after the sell-by date, if kept properly stored. Meat and Poultry usually have sell-by dates to look for.
After steak is purchased, it may be refrigerated for 3 to 5 days — the “sell-by” date on the package may expire during that storage period, but the steak will remain safe to use after the sell by date if it has been properly stored.
Beef that has gone bad will develop a slimy or sticky texture and smell bad or “off.” If beef develops a grayish color, that doesn't necessarily mean it has gone bad. Don't taste meat to determine if it's safe to eat or not. Call the USDA's hotline.
Here's how long these foods are safe to eat after their best before date, if they're stored properly: Milk, opened or unopened: 7 days. Yogurt, opened or unopened: 1 to 2 weeks. Butter, opened or unopened: 4 weeks.
After the use by date, don't eat it, cook it or freeze it. The food could be unsafe to eat or drink, even if it has been stored correctly and looks and smells fine. A lot of foods (Opens in a new window), including meat and milk, can be frozen before the use-by date though so plan ahead.
Eating expired foods or foods that are past their best-by date can expose your body to harmful bacteria that can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and a fever.
