For a Permanent commission you have to join the National Defence Academy or the Indian Military Academy. You can take the NDA entrance exam right after class XI. Clear the UPSC exam and a 5-day Service Selection Board interview, pass your medicals, and you're in NDA.
The DOD requires that all job applicants go through an extensive background check. Once it receives your resume, it will determine if you are a good fit. The HR department will then do an interview over the phone. If you make it through that stage, you'll have the chance to meet with hiring directors in person.
