The 14th Infantry, 4th Brigade Combat Team of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team (2nd BCT) of the United States Army, 2nd Infantry Division, welcomed them from Camp Pendleton and welcomed them back with a marching band and parade. It would appear as if the Soldiers could not wait for a second parade. The day began and ended at Camp Pendleton; the 14th Infantry will continue its mission in Afghanistan until the end of the year and the 13th U.S. Infantry Brigade Combat Team (2nd Brigade, 25th Infantry Division) will also be stationed at Camp Pendleton with another unit. After the formal greeting by the 14th Infantry and their commander, Gen. George Casey, a ceremonial sword was delivered to Capt. David C. McPherson for his distinguished service as the 14th Cavalry Sergeant Major. The Sergeant Major and his staff have been with the Army for more than 25 years and their services are valued to a high degree. They will be assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division as Battalion Chief of Staff. The ceremony was capped off with a ceremonial rifle salute from the 14th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (14th Infantry Battalion) at headquarters in the 2nd Brigade Activity Center. All along the parade route, banners were being unfurled in commemoration of the soldiers' missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. To the right of the main entrance to Joint Base San Antonio-Dellcrest was a banner with a large image of a U.S. Army Ranger (First Lieutenant Daniel Y. Scarf), his helmet, and boots on a rifle. A second banner was displayed on top of the fence of the airfield fence facing the parade route. With his rifle raised, the Ranger took a commanding position on the fence, and his comrades stood behind him, taking a rifle-armed salute. It is the job of the Sergeant Major to represent the Army and its traditions to the soldiers serving in his battalion. He has been with the Army since 1988 and has had to endure many challenges in this job but never more than this week. The 14th Infantry and the 13th U.S. Infantry Brigade Combat Team have been together for 13 years, stationed together on Fort Drum, N.Y., since Feb. 1, 2001. The teams have spent the last 13 years supporting Operation Enduring Freedom (OF), providing operational support to Operation Iraqi Freedom and supporting the surge in Afghanistan. They deployed to Afghanistan in June 2009.
