Original National Register of Historic Places Record Number NPS Form 10-900 (Oct. 1990) OMB No. 10 United States Department of the Interior National Park Service National Register of Historic Places Registering Information Number Not entered by the agency NPS. Doberman was a well-documented pioneer and manufacturer of dogs, primarily for show and sport. Doberman was founded in 1878 in Springfield, Missouri as an animal-testing laboratory, but during the 1880s and 1890s, their business and focus changed to the manufacture of dog-sport equipment and equipment to develop new breeds. For more information about dog sports and equipment, we recommend searching the Internet for Doberman, the sport or the company that makes the equipment. The following information was obtained from the Missouri Historical Society's website about Doberman: Dobermans originally originated as German hunters in the forests of Germany, where they were bred to compete in hunting shows. By the 1890s, they were being imported to America. These dogs were bred specifically to test the dogs in their sporting matches, and their stock was of purebred German descent. With their sharp teeth and large build, they were well-suited to be fighting dogs. In America, they were bred to be large working dogs, and their long legs, powerful build and strong muscles made them good hunters as well. They were also used to herd livestock, and they were popular as guard dogs. The name Doberman was derived from the German word den hoc, meaning “dog man” — the breed's original name in Germany. Doberman's history in Missouri is interesting, because Dobermans originated in the state of Missouri. Before the Civil War, there was a breeding facility at a farm west of Saint Louis. In the 1820s, Dobermans were bred to produce Doberman pinschers, a breed which was later used as a basis for many other breeds. Doberman, Pinscher and the cross-breeding of the three breeds later produced American Doberman pinschers, and then Dobermans. Eventually, Dobermans were used as “hunt” dogs. Doberman History Doberman originated as a hunting dog.
