Selective Service mail-back registration forms are available at any U.S. Post Office. A man can fill it out (leaving the space for his social security number blank, if he has not yet obtained one *), sign and date, affix postage, and mail to Selective Service without the involvement of the postal clerk.
Virtually all male U.S. citizens, regardless of where they live, and male immigrants, whether documented or undocumented, residing in the United States, who are 18 through 25, are required to register with Selective Service. The law says men must register with Selective Service within 30 days of their 18th birthday.
How do I find out if I am registered for Selective Service? Go to https://www.sss.gov/ and click on Check Registration. Click on Verify Now. Enter your information in the Online Registration Search grid.
This includes U.S. born and naturalized citizens, parolees, undocumented immigrants, legal permanent residents, asylum seekers, refugees, and all males with visas of any kind which expired more than 30 days ago. The few individuals who are exempt from this requirement are those on current non-immigrant visas.
Exemptions There are a few cases when a man is exempt from the registration requirement. Men who are exempt do not have a Selective Service registration number and are in compliance with federal law. Refer to the WHO MUST REGISTER page for those who may be exempt.
What Happens If You Don't Register for Selective Service. If you are required to register, and you don't, you will not be eligible for federal student aid, federal job training, or a federal job. You may be prosecuted and face a fine of up to $250,000 and/or jail time of up to five years.
