Domicile

What is domicile?

Domicile refers to the permanent legal residence of an individual. It is the place that a person considers as their permanent home, where they have the intention to return even if they are temporarily residing elsewhere. Domicile is determined by various factors such as the location of one's primary residence, business ties, and personal connections.

What are the types of domicile?

There are three main types of domicile that are recognized: domicile of origin, domicile of choice, and domicile by operation of law. Domicile of origin is acquired at birth and is generally based on the father's domicile. Domicile of choice is when an individual intentionally and voluntarily establishes a new permanent residence. Domicile by operation of law is acquired through legal actions such as marriage, adoption, or changes in citizenship.
