For pdfFiller’s FAQs

Below is a list of the most common customer questions. If you can’t find an answer to your question, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
Adjusting brakes on a car is a simple procedure that will improve the stopping distance of your car. Disc brakes adjust automatically every time they are used. Most drum brakes are designed to adjust when you drive in reverse and come to a stop. This isn't to say that drum brakes don't need to be adjusted occasionally.
Drum brakes usually need to be adjusted when the brake pedal has to be pressed down a lot before the brakes engage. Adjustments can be done only on brakes that are in good shape. To confirm your brakes are in good working order before you adjust them, check your vehicle for symptoms of a bad or failing drum brake.
They can adjust themselves going forward or backward. Keep in mind that even self-adjusting brakes require 1 initial adjustment. Basically if the brake shoes have to move too far before they touch the drums a pulley spins the adjustment wheel which then takes and adjusts the shoes out a bit further.
Inconsistent brake pedal feel. If the rear brakes are drum brakes, the driver may feel vibrations under braking. Hand brake feels loose. If the hand brake requires a hard yank to keep the car from rolling off, chances are the brake shoes need replacing. Scraping noise while braking.
So manual adjustment is usually necessary every 15k miles. You don't have to pull off the drum to adjust drum brakes.
Jack the vehicle up with the jack. Place it on jack stands. Look next to a rear wheel and find the brake chamber. Look at the back of the push rod to find the adjustment nut. Turn the nut in the other direction so that you hear it ratcheting as you turn. Measure the distance the push arm travels into the brake chamber.
Expert Reply: Self-adjusting brakes # AKEBRK-7-SA do not require that you travel in reverse for them to adjust. They can adjust themselves going forward or backward. Keep in mind that even self-adjusting brakes require 1 initial adjustment.
When the brakes are applied, the lever cannot move the adjuster screw because the brake pressure is being used to apply the shoes. The adjuster lever mechanism must store the adjustment and turn the notched wheel when the brake is released. A spring connects the lever to the primary shoe to contain the adjuster.
