Gender comes from the Latin word genus, meaning kind or race. It is defined by one's own identification as male, female, or intersex; gender may also be based on legal status, social interactions, public persona, personal experiences, and psychologic setting.

Ask calmly. Take a deep breath before you ask.
When asking about sex as a category, words like male, female and intersex should be used. Gender identity refers to the internal/psychological sense of self, regardless of what sex a person was assigned at birth. When asking about gender as a category, words like woman, man, and trans* should be used.
'Gender' refers to your sense of who you are as a guy, girl or something else, as opposed to what your physical characteristics, genes and hormones indicate. Identifying your gender can be more diverse than simply seeing yourself as 'male' or 'female', and people express their gender in different ways.
Notice any cues in how they present themselves. Name, hairstyle, clothing, and body language are all ways people express gender. For instance, if someone has a masculine name, wears masculine clothing, and moves in a masculine manner, they are more likely to use masculine pronouns.

If you're unsure which pronoun a person uses, listen first to the pronoun other people use when referring to them. Someone who knows the person well will probably use the correct pronoun. If you must ask which pronoun the person uses, start with your own. For example, "Hi, I'm Alex and I use the pronouns he and him.
If you aren't sure of someone's name or pronouns but you have already asked or met the person, it is okay to ask for them again or later. For the classroom, club/organization, or any other group that meets regularly, there are several ways to make space for pronouns.
