The first three digits of the Social Security number corresponded to the location of the Social Security office that issued the number. The middle two numbers in the Social Security number made up the group number, which reflects the order in which the SSA assigned Social Security numbers to new applicants.
The most common documentation for proof of SSN includes: Social Security card. 1040 Tax Return (federal or state versions acceptable) W2 and/or 1099s (includes 1099 MISC, 1099G, 1099R, 1099SSA, 1099DIV, 1099S, 1099INT)
For the social security card, HR staff must enter “Social Security Card", "Social Security Administration”, and the document number in the respective spaces. There is no expiration date listed on a social security card.

How can I correct the spelling of my name with the IRS? You can correct the spelling when you file or by calling us toll-free at 800-829-1040. When you file, check that both your name and SSN agree with your social security card to prevent any delays in processing your return and issuing any refunds.
