Below is a list of the most common customer questions. If you can’t find an answer to your question, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
Consolidation is the process in which reduction in volume takes place by expulsion of water under long-term static loads. When stress is applied to a soil that causes the soil particles to pack together more tightly. When this occurs in a soil that is saturated with water, water will be squeezed out of the soil.
Consolidation is the removal of water from the soil. In other words, it is the squeezing out of the water from the soil to make it denser. In the case of coarse-grained soils like sands and gravels, the removal of this pore water is easy since water freely moves from one region to another within these soil types.
There are three consolidation methods, which are used depending on the strength of the Parent company's control or influence (see also Significant influence): Full consolidation, Proportionate consolidation, and the Equity method.
Consolidation plays an important role in stability analysis for the embankment, footings or a column constructed on clayey soils. The settlement behavior of these structures and the pore pressure needs to be investigated for construction on these soils.
It is found by subtracting the stress carried by the water in the continuous void spaces (i.e. pore water pressure, u) from the total stress of the weight of the overlying material (v). Consolidation The reduction of bulk soil volume under loading due to flow of pore water.
To distinguish between the two mechanisms, “primary consolidation” refers to consolidation due to dissipation of excess water pressure, while “secondary consolidation” refers to the creep process.
Primary Consolidation. It is defined as the process in which the soil volume decreases. It is also defined as the decrease in water content of saturated soil that happens without the replacement of water by air. Primary consolidation treats the consolidation to take place only in one dimension.
The secondary consolidation happens after the primary compression, even after the excess hydrostatic stress has dissipated. Some settlement happens in the soil after primary consolidation and that is termed as secondary compression, and it is usually time dependent.
The primary consolidation settlement can be calculated from the coefficient of volume compressibility MV, which can further lead to the Young's modulus E = (1 + v)(1 2v)/[MV(1 v)], with an assumed Poisson's ratio v.
Clay and Organic soil are most prone to consolidation settlement. Consolidation is the process of reduction in volume due to expulsion of water under an increased load. It is a time related process occurring in saturated soil by draining water from void.
