A tick is a measure of the minimum upward or downward movement in the price of a security. A tick can also refer to the change in the price of a security from one trade to the next trade. Since 2001 and the advent of decimalization, the minimum tick size for stocks trading above $1 is one cent.
The value of the contract is $50 x the S&P 500 index value. What matters to most traders is the minimum price fluctuation and tick value, as this is what determines profit or losses on the contract. The E-mini moves in 0.25 point increments, and each one of those increments equates to $12.50 on one contract.
For day trading, 1000 ticks and 2000 ticks are the most common used. There is no best number of ticks to trade with. Different traders use different strategies on tick charts that suits them best. You just have to test different settings and select the one you feel most comfortable trading with.
The smaller tick size enables prices to adjust more easily to information and allows traders to quickly capture their information advantage, resulting in greater price efficiency and an information shift toward the smaller-tick cash market from the futures market.
