For pdfFiller’s FAQs

Below is a list of the most common customer questions. If you can’t find an answer to your question, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
Debt collectors report accounts to the credit bureaus, a move that can impact your credit score for several months, if not years. The late payments and subsequent charge-off that typically precede a collection account already will have damaged your credit score by the time the collection happens.
Even though debts still exist after seven years, having them fall off your credit report can be beneficial to your credit score. Note that only negative information disappears from your credit report after seven years. Open positive accounts will stay on your credit report indefinitely.
Improve Your Credit Score As collections get older, they affect your credit score less. Collection accounts will disappear from your credit report after seven years, even if you never pay them. But if the accounts are less than seven years old, a paid collection is better for your credit score than an unpaid one.
Paying off collections not only won't improve your score, it will damage it. Learn what to do. Settling with a collection agency will hurt your credit. Unfortunately, it can even hurt your score by updating the Date Of Last Activity (or DOLL).
Create a payment plan. Pay it off in one lump sum. Settle the debt for less than you owe.
Get the information in writing. If you don't believe you owe the money, dispute the debt in writing. Keep records of phone calls and messages. Debt collectors have many restrictions. Say little and stand firm. Don't be afraid to negotiate.
You don't have to pay anything more than what you owe. Collectors aren't allowed to charge any interest or fees to your account unless the original contract or by state law allows it.
Try to stop the lawsuit. Most creditors would rather settle a case without the hassle of going to court. Contact a lawyer. Consider your defense. Respond to the summons. Follow the court proceedings. Decide whether to accept the judgment.
Settlement can occur at any time even after a lawsuit has been filed and even after a judgment has been entered. That being said, the sooner you settle, the better deal you may get. In my experience debt buyers will settle for about 65% of the total amount, but you will likely have to really press them on this.
If you have no available cash for a lump sum payment, you can probably get monthly payments that will work for you. If you have received a summons, it likely means that you have not paid your debt in quite some time and the creditor is tired of asking you to pay your bill.
Getting served just means that you have been given notice of a lawsuit, in this case by a debt collector. You are served if you are handed a copy of the summons and complaint or if a summons and complaint is given to someone of suitable age and discretion at your home. But that does not mean the lawsuit is fake.

Don't ignore the letters. Sometimes people can't quite bring themselves to face bad news, and so hesitate to open or respond to important letters. Don't blindly accept liability. Even if you do owe the debt in question, be cautious before admitting liability. Try to settle. Keep diligent notes. Talk to a lawyer.
When your card issuer or a collection agency that has purchased your debt from the issuer can't get you to pay your bill, a lawsuit seeks to obtain a court judgment, which may give the company the right to garnish your wages and bank account until the debt is paid.
Failure to appear as directed on the summons can result in the issuance of a warrant (that is described below). Once the person is arrested on the warrant, they can be held in jail for up to 48 hours before they are brought before the issuing Court to answer the alleged charges.
