Begin the process early, giving yourself as much time as you can to plan a new course. Define course goals. Determine course content. Develop teaching methods and tools. Determine how you will evaluate student learning: Plan assignments and exams. Select text(s) and other materials.
Hours for Teaching and Preparation Rule of Thumb: 2-4 Hours of Prep for 1 Hour of Class. Many instructors may wonder how much prep time to spend on a class. Prep time can mean different things to different people. Many instructors assume prep time includes only the time spent getting ready for a particular class.
Planning, preparation and assessment (PPA) time is sacred. No one wants to fritter it away. All teachers are entitled to spend a minimum of 10% of their teaching time reflecting on what has worked well in the classroom and planning what to do next.
Some topics, I can plan a 90-minute class in 15 minutes flat. Other topics can take as much as 2 hours to plan a 90-minute class. Average is 30 to 45 minutes for me. In my first year of teaching, it was over an hour per class.
Course preparation is a significant component of teaching. Though often invisible to students, thorough preparation is the most critical factor in classroom success. Anticipating the needs and expectations of your students. Establishing learning goals. Selecting instructional strategies to support those goals.
Preparation and planning will make you a better teacher. A significant part of planning and preparation is conducting research. Studying theories and exploring the best practices that can be used for better classroom management. Studying the content that you teach in depth will also help you grow and improve.
Teachers are usually scheduled for around 6 to 7 hours of classroom teaching per day. As a student teacher, you'll be held to the same standards. So expect to spend 30-35 hours a week standing in the classroom.
Design your Classroom Management Plan. Plan your first a couple of weeks. Select and Plan Get-to-Know-You Activities. Create Paper flow and Material Systems. Create data collection systems. Bonus: Shop school supply sales like mad.
