To volunteer at an animal shelter, contact your local animal shelter or humane society and let them know you're interested in volunteering. You can also visit their website to see if there's a volunteer application available. Or, if you'd prefer, you can visit a local shelter in-person and fill out an application.
There are a variety of tasks assigned to volunteers; some include working with the animals, some do not. You can walk dogs, socialize cats, clean cages, help with feeding, watering and grooming, do adoption counseling or administrative tasks.
Homeless shelters. Volunteer duties may include cooking and serving food, organizing a food or coat drive, talking with residents, answering phones, picking up donated items, etc.
Children ages 14 -15 may enter our Junior Volunteer Program. Without exception, no one under 14 is permitted to volunteer at POST. Each Junior Volunteer must always be accompanied by a parent or guardian the same parent or guardian who attended the orientation and training with the Junior Volunteer.
Qualifications: Participants must be minimum of 14 years old. Participants are expected to be on time and volunteer for the entire shift. Participants should demonstrate eagerness to help with the shelter and duties, respectfulness to the staff, and the ability to follow instructions.
Longmont Humane Society Teen Volunteer Program Currently, teens account for 35% of the work done by volunteers with the animals in our shelter. Volunteer opportunities for teens 13-18 years of age include working in our Dog TLC, Junior Animal Care Assistant, and a variety of promotional programs.

Typically, you only need to be 14 or older to volunteer at an animal sanctuary or zoo. You will only be able to take advantage of this opportunity if you have an animal sanctuary or zoo in your area.

Minimum age requirements for volunteers vary depending on the program and facility. Some facilities accept volunteers at the age of 13 or 14, while at others a volunteer must be 16 or 18. Please contact the Volunteer Resources Department at the facility you would like to volunteer at for more information.
Some nursing homes don't allow you to volunteer until you're at least 16; find out by asking them directly.
