A digital signature provides proof of the message origin and a method to verify the integrity of the message. A digital certificate owner combines the data to be signed with their private key, and then transforms the data with an algorithm. Only the organization with the private key can create the digital signature.
Digital signatures employ asymmetric cryptography. In many instances they provide a layer of validation and security to messages sent through a non-secure channel: Properly implemented, a digital signature gives the receiver reason to believe the message was sent by the claimed sender.
Digital signature is used to verify authenticity, integrity, non-repudiation, i.e. it is assuring that the message is sent by the known user and not modified, while digital certificate is used to verify the identity of the user, maybe sender or receiver.
