Piecework, or piece work pay, is paying an employee a fixed pay rate for each unit they produce. Piece rate pay is most common for a contractor employee. However, employees who are not contractors can be paid piecework pay, too. Piecework rates typically depend on the job and product produced.
A piece-rate pay system means that the worker is paid per unit of creation. Whether the “unit of creation” is a clay pot or a piece of writing, a person is paid by individual output, no matter how long it takes.
Piece work (or piecework) is any type of employment in which a worker is paid a fixed piece rate for each unit produced or action performed, regardless of time.
Piecework, or piece work pay, is paying an employee a fixed pay rate for each unit they produce. Piece rate pay is most common for a contractor employee. However, employees who are not contractors can be paid piecework pay, too. Piecework rates typically depend on the job and product produced.
Piece-rate pay gives a payment for each item produced it is therefore the easiest way for a business to ensure that employees are paid for the amount of work they do. Piece-rate pay encourages effort, but, it is argued, often at the expense of quality.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES Piecework incentive plans have several advantages. A more subtle disadvantage is that since piece rates are quoted on a per-piece basis, in worker's minds the production standard (in pieces per hour) become tied inseparably to the amount of money earned.
Disadvantage: Unpredictable Expenses Naturally, a company that pays commissions would gladly incur high commission costs in exchange for strong revenue performance. However, the uncertainty with commission pay can lead to budget challenges, especially if you sell on account to buyers.
Piecework. Under a piecework plan, an employee is paid a certain amount of money per unit produced. For example, Patty is paid $20 for each suit she completes. If she completes 10 suits in one day, she is paid $200 for the day. Sometimes employees are paid a base pay along with the piecework rate.
