There is no specific charitable donations limit without a receipt, you always need some sort of proof of your donation or charitable contribution. For amounts up to $250, you can keep a receipt, cancelled check or statement. Donations of more than $250 require a written acknowledgement from the charity.
If the clothes you put in clothing collection bins have a value of less than $250, the IRS won't demand a receipt for them on your taxes. The IRS does recommend you keep a written record of the donation. Include the organization, date and location, a description of the items and their fair market value.
Those who have donated non-cash items and items less than $250 may wonder if there is a specific tax donation form to use. The answer is: yes, if their deduction for all noncash gifts is more than $500.
Noncash Charitable Contributions applies to deduction claims totaling more than $500 for all contributed items. If a donor is claiming over $5,000 in contribution value, there is a section labeled Donee Acknowledgement in Section B, Part IV of Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Form 8283 that must be completed.
Still, keeping receipts always makes sense in case the IRS flags your return for another reason. You are legally allowed to claim charitable deductions for up to 60 percent of your adjusted gross income, but again, if you go much above that 3 percent rate, the IRS will likely audit your return.
Each donor receipt should include the name of the donor as well. Many donor receipts also include the charity's address and EIN, although not required. The donor, however, should have records of the charity's address. Donor receipts should include the date of the contribution.
Some churches issue receipts on an annual basis. This is usually done by the end of January each year in order to give donors a record for their taxes. This may be in the form of a statement rather than a thank you letter.
The charitable donation deduction allows you to lower your taxable income for donations or gifts to qualified, tax-exempt organizations. To get the deduction, you must file Form 1040, the form you use for an individual or joint income tax return. You also must itemize your deductions on Schedule A on Form 1040.

Itemize. Choose carefully when making a donation. Remember that donations to individuals will not qualify for a tax deduction. Get a receipt - even for cash. Don't overlook payroll deductions. Pay attention to the value of any donor incentives.
