Examples of electronic signatures include: a scanned image of the person's ink signature, a mouse squiggle on a screen or a hand-signature created on a tablet using your finger or stylus, a signature at the bottom of your email, a typed name, a biometric hand-signature signed on a specialized signing hardware device, a
Each party should get an original signed copy of the contract for their files. That means if there are two parties to the contract, two identical contracts must be signed. One original copy of the contract should go to you, and one original copy should go to the other party.
The term “counterpart" is used in legal documents to describe a copy of a contract which is signed and is considered legally binding, in the same way as the original. In many cases, several copies of a contract document are prepared, so that all parties and signatories can have a copy of the contract.
There is a principle in US law known as the “best evidence" rule -- which permits only the “best evidence" of a fact under dispute to be admitted. If you have a photocopy of the contract, that's even better, as the document itself can be reviewed by the fact-finder (and opposing party).
Many people still mistakenly believe that only an original signature is enforceable. This would require an original of the contract, signed by the parties, and not a copy, fax, or scan of the contract.
