You can also visit their website to see if there's a volunteer application available. Or, if you'd prefer, you can visit a local shelter in-person and fill out an application.
Typically, you only need to be 14 or older to volunteer at an animal sanctuary or zoo. You will only be able to take advantage of this opportunity if you have an animal sanctuary or zoo in your area.
There are a variety of tasks assigned to volunteers; some include working with the animals, some do not. You can walk dogs, socialize cats, clean cages, help with feeding, watering and grooming, do adoption counseling or administrative tasks.
Volunteering at an Animal Shelter: How to Get Started. On the surface, volunteering at a shelter may just look like petting kittens and walking puppies. In reality, shelters need a lot more from their volunteers. First, contact your preferred shelter and find out what their volunteer needs are.

Some parents struggle to find organizations that allow young children to participate as volunteers, due to age restrictions or other requirements. “Many organizations set minimum ages of 12, 13, or even 18 to be involved in activities.
Be at least 16 (sometimes 18) years of age. If you are under that age, some shelters run family volunteer programs where parents and children come in to work together. Check in with several shelters. If you aren't old enough to volunteer at one center, you might be old enough to volunteer at another.
Longmont Humane Society Teen Volunteer Program Currently, teens account for 35% of the work done by volunteers with the animals in our shelter. Volunteer opportunities for teens 13-18 years of age include working in our Dog TLC, Junior Animal Care Assistant, and a variety of promotional programs.

All potential volunteers must be at least 16 years old at time of application. Commit to 8 hours per month for at least 6 months. Pay a non-refundable application fee of $40 for adults or $25 for youth (16-17 years old). All applicants 18 years of age and older must complete a background screening.
All ASPCA volunteers must be at least 16 years old. Due to the extensive training requirements, we are not able to accept short-term volunteers. The ASPCA does not accept volunteers needing to fulfill court-appointed community service.
