Click where you want to insert the table of contents usually near the beginning of a document. Click References > Table of Contents and then choose an Automatic Table of Contents style from the list.
Apply the built-in Heading styles to the headings in your text. In Word 2003 and before: Insert > Reference > Tables and Indexes. Click on the Table of Contents Tab. Click OK. In Word 2007 and Word 2010: References > Table of Contents > choose an option from the menu.
Go to References > Update Table. Select one of the following: Update page numbers only This only updates the pages that the headings are on, and ignores any changes to the heading text. Update entire table This will reflect any updates to the heading text, as well as any page changes. Select OK.

Click anywhere inside the TOC. Go to the References tab. Go to the far left of that tab, and click the Update Table button in the Table of Contents group. If asked, select the option to Update entire table and click OK.

In the Binder, click and select all the documents you want to include in the TOC. Then use the menu item EDIT > COPY SPECIAL > COPY DOCUMENTS AS TOC. Create a new, blank page that you want to use as a Scrivener table of contents and paste the copied items.
Click anywhere inside the TOC. Go to the References tab > Table of Contents > Insert Table of Contents. On the Table of Contents window, change the Show levels setting from 3 to 4 or 5, depending on how deep you want to go. Click OK. Say Yes to replace the existing TOC.
