Write it as a formal letter. Start with the date, the landlord's name, and his/her complete mailing address. Greet the landlord properly using a salutation, such as Dear (landlord's name). State your reasons to move out. Keep it concise but informative. Enclose in an envelope.
I am giving 1 month's notice to end my tenancy, as required by law. I will be leaving the property on (date xxxix). I would like you to be at the property on the day I move out to check the premises and for me to return the keys. Furthermore, I also need you to return my tenancy deposit of (state amount).
Explain the situation. Tell your tenant in straightforward terms what the problem is, and explain that they cannot stay on the property any longer. Describe the consequences. Offer them a way out. Finalize.
Check your lease to see if you need to send a formal letter. Keep your written notice simple and polite. Don't forget to include the date on your letter. Include your forwarding address.
Can my landlord evict me without first going to court? No, your landlord usually cannot evict you without a court order. As long as you haven't abandoned your home, your landlord cannot change the locks, install a deadbolt, take off doors, or do anything to stop you from entering your home.
